HOW INSURANCE WORKS

AT INSIGHT THERAPY NYC

You’ve got enough stress. Let us take some away.

We’re Out-of-Network

All of our therapists are out-of-network providers, which means we aren’t credentialed with insurance companies or in-network with insurers.

If your plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, you’ll pay for sessions at the time of service. We’ll provide you with a monthly superbill – an itemized statement you can submit to your insurance for potential partial reimbursement. Your insurer will determine the amount covered once you’ve met your deductible.

Please note: We cannot accept prepayment for future sessions.

Complete your paperwork in Simple Practice

Before starting therapy, you’ll receive an email from Simple Practice with the subject “Client Portal,” sent from your therapist (@simplepractice.com). This portal contains all required intake paperwork, which must be completed before your first session.

1.

Confirm your out-of-network benefits

Starting therapy is an investment in your well-being, and we aim to make the process as straightforward as possible. Session fees are typically $175 per 45-50 minute session, but may vary depending on the length of the session.

If you’re unsure whether your insurance offers out-of-network reimbursement, you can fill out this form for an instant estimate* of your benefits. If the estimate doesn’t provide the clarity you need, click here and our team will confirm your benefits directly with your insurance company.

*Please note: this is only an estimate, not a guarantee of reimbursement. Always confirm the details with your insurance company, especially when it comes to telehealth coverage.

2.

Questions to ask your insurance representative:

  • “Does my plan include out-of-network mental health benefits, including outpatient psychotherapy and telehealth services?”

  • “Do I have an out-of-network deductible, and if so, how much remains before my plan starts reimbursing me?”

  • “What is the maximum reimbursement for mental health service code 90837 with a psychotherapist?”

  • If they can’t provide a direct answer, follow up with: “What is the maximum allowed amount for service code 90837 with a psychotherapist, and what percentage of that amount does my plan cover?” The percentage of the maximum allowed amount is the portion you’d receive back as reimbursement.

Receive your superbill

Each month, we’ll provide a superbill listing your sessions, fees, and the required diagnostic/procedure codes.

What is a superbill?

A superbill is a detailed receipt your therapist provides that contains all the information your insurance company needs to process an out-of-network claim. Unlike a standard invoice, a superbill includes not only the cost of your sessions but also the clinical and administrative details insurers require to determine reimbursement.

When you see a therapist at Insight, you’ll receive superbills on a monthly basis. You then submit these documents to your insurance company, either through an online portal, by email, or by mail, depending on your plan’s process. If your plan covers out-of-network mental health services and you’ve met your deductible, your insurance company will review the superbill and send reimbursement directly to you.

What information is included on a superbill?

Every superbill contains the standardized details your insurance provider looks for:

  • Patient Information – Your name, date of birth, contact details, and (if applicable) your insurance ID.

  • Provider Information – Your therapist’s name, practice address, contact details, and any required provider ID numbers.

  • Date(s) of Service – The exact date(s) of your therapy session(s).

  • CPT (Procedure) Codes – The standardized billing codes that describe the services provided.

  • Diagnosis Code (ICD-10) – The diagnostic code that justifies the medical necessity of therapy.

  • Description of Services – A short summary of the service delivered (e.g., individual psychotherapy).

  • Place of Service (POS) Code – Whether the session took place in person (code 11) or via telehealth (code 10).

  • Units – The quantity of each service provided (for example, two sessions = 2 units).

  • Fee/Charge – The cost per session and the total billed amount.

3.

Submit to your insurance company

If you receive superbills, you’ll get an email from Simple Practice on the 5th of each month with a secure link to download your superbill for the previous month.

Submitting a superbill means sending it to your insurance company for reimbursement. Steps for submitting your superbill:
